My Mad Fat Diary (season 1)
This show was all over my dash and it caught my attention so I gave it a watch last week. I ended up watching all 6 episodes within 24 hours. It probably only took that long because I had to go to work in-between.
I wasn’t gripped immediately, it was probably toward the end of the second/start of the third episode when I realised I was absolutely sold. At first I felt like it was a little too “young” for me but I was wrong.
Speaking as an English ex-teenager (currently almost 22) I could recognise every single character in this show from my teenage life. The core six, parents & random chav gang included.
I think it’s pretty awesome that a show like this exists, especially at this point in time. Something aimed at teenagers/young adults that doesn’t focus on a bunch of conventionally flawless super models and fantasy creatures (for the record I love a ton of shows fitting that description). The characters in this show are realistic in way I don’t see very often. Having a lead like Rae is, in my opinion, a really positive step forward for television.
People call it “uncomfortable” viewing, and I can see why because it took me way back to a time when I was riddled with insecurities, and it deals with the taboo of genuine mental illness in everyday youths. Over just 6 episodes we see Rae & the others gradually getting better, gaining confidence, forging relationships and moving forward. I’ve seen people refer to it as “unrealistic” but I totally disagree. Not only is it encouraging for people watching the show who are in similar situations, but I think growth, self-love and finding love are all as realistic as experiencing self-hate, downward spirals and unrequited feelings, no matter who you are.
I’ve seen people finally get to be with the person they were pining for, senseless bullies give people a break, people en mass support honesty, etc. It’s showing you the best and worst of people.
In terms of characters my personal favourites were Tix, Finn & Archie - it’s hard to narrow it down though because I pretty much love them all.
Personally I’m REALLY looking forward to season 2 and everything it could explore. C:
